Wine is an alcohol drink made from fermented grape juice. Although it is true that an alcohol drink can be made from the fermented juice of many fruits, these are not really wine as the word wine itself is derived from grape.
It is believed that the production of wine dates to 6000 to 5000 BC in what is now Iran and Georgia. Grapes began to be cultivated for eating and winemaking in the early Bronze Age most notably in Egypt. Wine production flourished in ancient Greece and then throughout the Roman Empire. With few exceptions, all of the major European wines producing regions were established by the Romans. Today the world’s top wine producing, and export, nations, France, Italy, and Spain were all past of the Roman Empire at one time. France, Italy and Spain account for nearly 60% of the total export wine market. (The US sits at 5%)
We have presented wine organized by nation of origin. Each nation is then dissected examining its regions, grapes, producers and so on. As one can imagine, this is a massive project and we are working each day to get this reference material organized and presented.
