World of Wine
The world of wine was once clustered around the edges of the great Mediterranean Sea. For centuries this fact remained and even when the New World had begun to make wine to satisfy the thirst of transplanted Europeans, the wine of “consequence” was still centered on the Mediterranean. Just three decades ago it would have been a wild idea to suggest drinking a wine from New Zealand or Chile, and California wine was great for picnics but serious wine people drank French wine while the adventurous oenophile dabbled in wines from Italy, Spain or Germany. Today, the world of wine has both expanded and shrunk. Expanded to all reaches of the globe that offer suitable climates and shrunk like everything else bringing products from once far away places to our local stores.
