Alicats Viognier “Gimelli Vineyards” Cienega Valley 2009 (USA)

FEATURED

Brilliant pale straw color. The nose is incredibly fragrant and well-defined offering scents of ripe apricot, peach, pineapple, and spring flowers with a touch of honey. The palate equals the generosity of the nose while being crisper with a generous dose of citrus that envelops the ripe fruit core. Perfectly balanced with complex fruit and mineral flavors that finish with a blast of ginger. This is what Viognier should be.

Beronia Barricas 198 “Reserva” Rioja (DOCa) 2004 (Spain)

FEATURED

Deep, rich garnet red color with no signs of its advancing years. The nose is wonderfully complex and with scents of red and black fruits, with notes of rich, sour cherries, forest floor, plum, dark chocolate, allspice, clove, and hints of cardamon. The palate fulfills the promise of the nose delivering ripe and semi-tart fruit with waves of supporting earth, spice, and oak notes. Ideally balanced with great length and soft, integrated tannins. We really can’t find a single thing to quibble about. It’s perfect.

FEATURED

Deep ruby to cherry red color. The nose is rich with the scents of ripe cherry and red berries with accents of vanilla, pepper, and clove. The palate fully agrees with the nose delivering a full-throttle Pinot that defies the boundaries of Pinot Noir’s grip and fruit intensity. It becomes a bit hot on the finish with rising oak notes as well. This is a Pinot for those seeking a boldly styled California Pinot.

The palate is in full agreement delivering a lush but incredibly well balanced fruit-driven core. This blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet, and Petite Sirah does not conform to any Old World model but who cares! It’s delicious and at $11 it’s a tremendous value.

Cornerstone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2009 (USA)

FEATURED

Deep ruby red veering toward black being entirely opaque. The aromatics are redolent of vintages past for this great wine offering scents of freshly crushed black fruits with red fruit in support. Accents of brown baking spices, pine cone, dark chocolate, and vanilla tinged oak round out the aromatics. The palate is as dense and full as the nose would suggest offering a broad core of ripe, fresh fruit with flanking notes of spice and oak. Ideally balanced with great length and firm but approachable tannins. Another classic.
