Maestro Dobel Diamond Reposado, 100% Agave (Mexico); 40% abv (Mexico)
Virtually crystal clear. The nose opens soft with lush agave notes mingling with butterscotch and tropical fruit. The palate entry is round and semi-sweet with an edge of prickly, citrus-like flavors. The flavors drift in a confusing manner seeming to suffer from a healthy dose of manipulation and troubling additions as well as the subtraction of color. This product appears to be designed as an accessory for club rats.
Maker's Mark “46” Bourbon (USA); 47% abv (USA)
Deep, brilliant bronze color. The nose is rich with sweet Bourbon and caramel accented by scents of black pepper, clove, toasted oak, and hints of vanilla bean. The palate confirms the nose delivering a lush and silky core of caramel and vanilla with flanking notes of spice and oak. Wonderfully complex and ideally balanced as the “46” staves add a spice element that is not found in the original Maker’s Mark. A great after-dinner sipping Bourbon.
Mandarine Napoleon Liqueur (Belgium); 38% abv (Belgium)
Brilliant burnt orange to amber color. The aromatics fill the nose with scents of mandarin juice concentrate with orange zest, honey, cinnamon, mace, and wood-aged brandy. The palate echoes the nose delivering a silky soft core of honeyed mandarin with intriguing notes of brown baking spices, citrus zest, and hints of wood. Viscous without being heavy with lingering notes of candied ginger and star anise on the finish. Serve slightly chilled or use in any number of cocktails (a Sidecar comes to mind).
Martin Miller's "Reformed" London Dry Gin (England); 40% abv (England)
Brilliant, crystal clear. The nose immediately reveals a complex mélange of citrus notes that features both fresh squeezed lemon and lime but citrus zest as well with hints of coriander, anise, orange peel, and subtle juniper aromatics. The palate echoes the nose delivering a silky core while maintaining a keen vibrancy. It becomes spicy with hints of pepper and a ginger-like heat that adds intrigue and balance. Enjoy with your best tonic.
Martini & Rossi “Extra Dry” Vermouth (Italy); 18% abv (Italy)
Pale straw color and crystal clear. The nose is quite expressive and alluring, ideally mingling dry, fruity wine notes with a complex mélange of herbs and spices with notes of orange peel. The palate is a wonderful balancing act of fruit, fresh herbs, and dry citrus tones. Great on ice or mixed with soda or ginger as well as improving your Martini – of course!
Mazama Infused Pepper (USA); 40% abv (USA)
Deep golden to copper color. The nose is reminiscent of a fine mix of sweet and spicy peppers as they sit atop a grilled Italian sausage (hunger alert). The palate is more spice than sweet with a lingering peppery note that longs for a foil in a fresh cocktail. The pedestrian instinct is to suggest a Bloody Mary but this creation requires more creativity. A fine addition to the bar.
McIvor Blended Scotch Whisky (Scotland); 40% abv (Scotland)
Deep golden to copper color. The nose is profoundly expressive with notes of wild honey, roasted nuts, caramel, and dried fruits. A soft palate entry leads to a medium body accented by black pepper and hints of ginger and cloves. At well under $15 a bottle this should be your house Whisky. An undisputed “Best Buy.”
Mercury Gin (England); 47% abv (England)
Clear with small particles at the bottle’s bottom. Very floral with orange notes in the lead with accents of juniper. Refreshing while semi-viscous and lush with a burst of sweetness that soon becomes dry if not a bit bitter on the finish.
Merlet Crème de Cassis (France); 20% abv (France)
Deep, darkest ruby/garnet color with evident viscosity. The fruit purity in the aromatics is astounding with incredible concentration offering both ultra-ripe and bittersweet notes and hints of sour cherry. The palate echoes the nose delivering a lush, velvet like texture of perfectly balanced black fruit concentrate with tart berry notes as the foil. Heavenly.
Merlet Crème de Fraise (France); 20% abv (France)
Bright garnet to burgundy with hints of orange. Rich and concentrated strawberry scents are supported by blood orange, citrus, and sweet wild flowers. The palate delivers on the promise of the nose delivering a complex fruit attack that strikes the perfect balance of tart and sweet with an ever evolving fruit core that lingers on for minutes. The descriptors could go on and on but ultimately it will never do justice to this masterpiece.
