BOW for the Week of: May 15 to May 21, 2013

Established in 1988 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Conway, Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLB) became the first microbrewery in the state of Ohio and today remains one of Ohio's most award-winning and trusted brewers.

Great Lakes Brewing had humble beginnings making about 1,000 barrels a year in their brewpub. The first brew was a Dortmunder-style lager that later became known as Dortmunder Gold. Soon other tasty Ales and Lagers followed. We have long been fans of their: Burning River Pale Ale, Conway's Irish Ale, Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, and Eliot Ness Amber Lager.

In 2000, Great Lakes Brewing opened its new, greatly expanded brewery that has allowed GLB to offer their beers to thirsty consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (as well as their native Ohio).

The GLB Dortmunder Gold is part of their regular line-up and has been since nearly the begining. This great lager takes its name from the German city that is most recognized for this style. It's a beer that strikes the perfect balance of malty richness and hops while not being too much of either.

Tasting Notes:

Brilliant golden color with a fine bead of bubbles that streams upward from the time it's poured until the last swallow. The aromatics are malty and floral with sweet grain notes and a well-integrated hops impression. The palate is substantial while dry with crisp grain and citrus notes. Ideally balanced with great length and a dry, vibrant finish. $9.99 per six-pack
