Ommegang Hennepin, 750ml btls. (USA)
This fresh and hoppy, farmhouse style ale has a champagne like effervescence with a crisp but light on the tongue finish. Very true to the classic Belgian style offering both rusticity with the bright flavors of spring. A wonderful brew offered at a bargain price.
Orval Trappist, 12oz. btls. (Belgium)
Unlike the other Trappist breweries, Orval makes just one style of beer. Their ale is orange to brown in color with a wildly aromatic nose offering scents of grain, citrus, and corriander. The palate is medium to full filled with fruity notes accented by spice, dried hops, and wild flowers. Incredibly complex begging the next sip. This is a classic!
Oskar Blues Ten Fidy Imperial Stout, 4pk Cans 12oz (USA)
The color is pure black with not a glimmer of sunlight breaking through. As expected, the nose is filled with the scents of dark roasted malts, cocoa nibs, espresso, and treacle. The palate delivers on the promise of the nose being altogether more dry and sessionable than expected. The idea of a 10-abv brew being sessionable is indeed frightening! It finished with a lush, creamy texture with trailing notes of chocolate and toffee almonds. A lovely brew but priced out of the comfort zone of most consumers.
Otter Creek Quercus Vitis Humulus, 22 oz. (USA)
Bright, deep copper color with a rocky white head. The nose is wild and complex and while the wine notes come through (it is made with the addition of Sauvignon Blanc juice) the malt and hops take center stage. The palate is much richer than the nose suggests but all in line with the 12% alcohol by volume that the label states. Very malty and fruity with a good deal of alcohol burn that detracts from the overall experience.
